Joyce Burgess

An intense interest in colour and exploration of relationships between colours are the main elements of Joyce Burgess's paintings. By obscuring and revealing the painted surfaces, flashes of colour, repeated rhythm's and glimpses of 'something' beyond the surface invite the viewer deeper into the composition. In order to achieve this result, bands of colour are worked in opposing directions, first building up an underpainting of carefully chosen combinations of colours, and then overpainting with contracting or complimentary colours to reveal or obscure previous stages. Joyce adds; 'A commitment to structured, two-dimentional compositions and a meticulous process provides the artist with infinate opportunity to realise the potential of flat colour on canvas, and fuels a constant engagement with colour and surface pattern'. Based in Lancashire, Joyce finds inspiration in the regular patterns and terraced houses of milltowns, and has exhibited extensively within this region.
