Hugh Walker is based in Glasgow and has exhibited there, as well as in Edinburgh. He is largely self-taught, but has found inspiration in the work of Weston, Walker Evans and Hatakeyama amongst others. While his own photography continually evolves, he is particularly drawn to form, colour, texture and abstraction. Locally, he has made studies of urban dereliction and destructive processes, and has travelled widely in China, Arizona, Spain, Cuba and Mexico. Apart from the great historic sites and natural phenomena ,what struck him particularly in the latter were the distinctive everyday aspects of the urban environment, much hidden away in quiet backstreets. He adds; 'The almost random patterns of surface decoration and infrastructure seem to compose themselves at the micro level. There is often something painterly in this which is my aspiration to explore'.
